Manoa

UF Hillel’s Student Leadership Engine

Manoa, which means engine in Hebrew, strives to put students in the driver seat to craft and carry forward the vision and agenda for UF Hillel working in tandem with our Program Staff while building partnerships with other [Jewish] clubs on campus.

Manoa is comprised of 6 team captains on the following themes: Shabbat and Holiday, Social, Tzedek, Israel, Learning Initiatives, and Arts.  Each Team Captain is responsible for recruiting at least 5 students to serve on their team; so if you’re interested in getting involved please reach out to one of the Team Captains.  Here is our Leadership Team for the upcoming 2009-2010 academic year:

Lisa Aronson, Arts

Naomi Fireman, Grinspoon Fellow (Israel)

Avi Leavitt, Shabbat & Holidays

Michael Rosenberg, Tzedek

Deborah Swerdlow, Shabbat & Holidays

Zahara Zahav, Jewish Learning

Mallory Zuckerman, Arts

Lisa Aronson

Lisa Aronson – Arts - lisa913@ufl.edu
Lisa is incredibly excited to be joining the UF Hillel team as a Manoa Arts Jewish Campus Fellow. Lisa is a fourth year political science and economic double major with a focus on international relations and the Middle East. She has been involved in the arts since she started dancing at the age 4 and is very passionate about the arts. She is looking forward to working with Mallory, the other Manoa Arts leader, and expanding the Manoa Arts program next year.

Naomi Fireman

Naomi Fireman – Grinspoon Fellow (Israel) - naomifireman@gmail.com
Shalom! Naomi is a junior (where did the time go?!) majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders in high hopes of becoming an audiologist while continuing to be a strong Israel advocate! During her short two years at UF, she has been an active member in the Jewish Student Union and Gators for Israel. In the off chance that she is not committing her time to Israel awareness you can find Naomi outside just around the river bend or expanding her knowledge on India. She hopes to amplify and strengthen the student’s knowledge, passion and love for Israel at the University of Florida.

Avi Leavitt

Avi Leavitt – Shabbat & Holidays - iamfencing@gmail.com
Born in South Florida, Avi is a fourth-year student studying Computer Engineering. When he is not spending time at Hillel, Avi fences competitively with the UF Fencing Club. He dreams of one day writing a musical masterpiece and becoming a tornado chaser (although not necessarily at the same time). Avi is enthusiastic about creating a strong Shabbat and Holiday presence at the University of Florida, and looks forward to working with Deborah to make this year exciting!

Michael Rosenberg

Michael Rosenberg – Tzedek - mhrtoo@yahoo.com
Michael is a 3rd year student studying Biochemistry and Philosophy. He is involved with Koach and JSU, as well as other campus activities. His plans include going to medical school and working for Doctors without Borders, after making Aliyah. Michael's work in Tzedek focuses on getting students active and passionate about social justice programs to help the local community of Gainesville and the global community abroad.

Deborah Swerdlow

Deborah Swerdlow – Shabbat & Holidays – deborahswerdlow@gmail.com
Deborah Swerdlow is a fourth-year double major in journalism and Middle Eastern languages and cultures. Yes, that means she speaks Hebrew and Arabic, and no, she does not want to be a spy! She's a native Floridian who has only seen snow once (and it was less than half an inch, so it doesn't count). Deborah has been involved with the Jewish community at UF since day one of her freshman year, and she's looking forward to creating meaningful Shabbat and holiday experiences for each and every Jewish student at UF.

Zahara Zahav

Zahara Zahav – Jewish Learning – zzahav@ufl.edu
Zahara Zahav is a lover of all learning but specifically studies journalism as a senior at the University of Florida. She likes to read depressing Russian novels and listen to uplifting American folk songs. She is called by an inexhaustible list of nicknames and makes a mean cup of coffee. Zahara's hopes for the upcoming year include helping students find their own beat in the great, Jewish dance party and boogeying till morning to the spine-tingling tunes of Torah and Talmud with whoever wants in.

Mallory Zuckerman- Arts - mal.zuckerman@gmail.com

Mallory Zuckerman, a public relations junior at the University of Florida, is continuing her position as the Manoah Arts leader for a second year. Her contributions to Hillel’s Open Mic Night series, Art Gallery exhibitions, 40 Days 40 Nights Tour, JAMnetwork and other programs have led to the creation of a Jewish artistic community unique to Gainesville. This year, Mallory will lend her passion for the arts and PR savvy to the Manoah board and continue to enhance the network of Jewish artists, musicians, writers and arts enthusiasts.
