Religious Holidays Attendance Policy
At UF, students have the right to observe religious holidays without facing academic consequences. The university’s policy allows absences for religious observances if you notify your instructors as early as possible (view the full policy). Just as students are responsible for informing faculty, instructors are responsible for honoring your requests and providing accommodations. Balancing classes and Jewish commitments can be challenging, but you don’t have to do it alone—UF Hillel is here to support you. Reach out to Rabbi Jonah Zinn anytime for guidance or assistance.
Religious Holidays Attendance Policy FAQ
What is the University of Florida’s policy on religious holidays?
UF respects students’ rights to observe the holy days of their religious faith. If a religious holiday conflicts with a class, test, or assignment, students can request an excused absence and reasonable accommodations.
What do students need to do to be excused for a religious holiday?
Students must notify their instructor in advance—ideally early in the semester—if they will miss class or academic activities due to a religious observance.
Do students need to provide documentation or proof of the religious holiday?
No. Students are not required to provide any certification or verification of their observance.
What happens if a student misses a test or assignment for religious reasons?
Instructors must provide a reasonable opportunity to make up missed work. Students cannot be penalized for observing a religious holiday if they inform the instructor in advance.
What if a major exam or class event is scheduled on a widely observed religious holiday?
If an instructor is aware that a significant number of students may be absent due to a religious observance, they are encouraged not to schedule major assessments or important activities on that date. For this reason, the students must contact their instructor in advance to ensure they are aware of the conflict.
What if an instructor does not provide accommodations?
Students who believe they were unfairly denied an academic benefit due to their religious beliefs or practices have the right to address the issue, including through UF’s student grievance process. Students seeking guidance are encouraged to contact Rabbi Jonah Zinn, UF Hillel Executive Director.
Where can students get help or more information?
Students should first speak with their instructor. For additional support, contact Rabbi Jonah Zinn, UF Hillel Executive Director, who can guide students on additional steps.
What are faculty members’ responsibilities under this policy?
Faculty are obligated to accommodate students' religious observances when notified in advance. This includes allowing excused absences and the opportunity to make up missed work. The policy also states that faculty should be mindful of scheduling major assessments on significant religious holidays.
Are faculty expected to track or verify religious observances?
Students are encouraged to reach out to Rabbi Jonah Zinn for help navigating the conversation. UF has resources to assist students if needed.
